25 must-visit places and must-do experiences named for 2026

The venerable travel guide Lonely Planet published its “Best in Travel 2026” book on October 21, featuring a list of 25 great places and 25 great experiences to try out in the year ahead. It’s accompanied by a set of unique itineraries curated on the new Lonely Planet Journeys travel-planning service.

CNN Travel caught up with Nitya Chambers, Lonely Planet’s executive editor and senior vice president of content, to find out what made the cut and why.

Best places
One of Chambers’ favorite picks on this year’s list? Brazil’s “Little Japan,” otherwise known as the Sao Paolo neighborhood of Liberdade.

“Brazil has the largest Japanese community outside of Japan; 2 million claim connection to Japanese descent in Brazil,” she says. Liberdade was “really full of surprises. The anime-inspired street art, the oriental garden. It’s rumored to have the best ramen outside of Tokyo, although I’m sure that’s always a heated debate.”

Another urban pick is Mexico City. Chambers “cannot say enough great things about it. History, food, culture, art! And it was walkable. It was incredible.” The bougainvillea-strewn neighborhoods of Coyoacan, La Roma and La Condesa all get a shout-out from Lonely Planet this year.
The US selections on the destinations list are Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota – also featured on National Geographic’s Best of the World list for 2026 – and Maine.

“Maine has such a unique culture in the United States,” says Chambers. “So coastal, so much hiking in nature. The beauty there is really distinctive and the (four) national parks there are amazing.”

A forest hike in the springtime is recommended, and don’t miss the heron rookeries; the colonies can support up to 500 birds.

Over on the western edges of Europe, Tipperary is a “truly a hidden gem,” she says. It’s Ireland’s largest inland county and “a lot of folks just pass through on their way to the Wild Atlantic Way (coastal trail). But I think Tipperary really has one of the most beautiful and underrated driving routes.”

And in Asia, the island of Phuket is best known for its “tropical honeymoon, romantic vibe,” but more people are now discovering it as a work-and-travel spot for digital nomads.

The case centers on Ali Danial Hemani, a dual citizen of the United States and Pakistan, who was indicted in 2023 on a single count of violating the guns-and-drugs law after the FBI found a 9mm pistol, 60 grams of marijuana, and 4.7 grams of cocaine at his family home. This prosecution, the government told the high court, rested Hemani’s habitual use of marijuana.

The court will likely hear arguments in the Hemani case next year and hand down a decision by the end of June.

A federal district court dismissed the charge, noting a landmark decision from the Supreme Court in 2022 that made it easier for Americans to carry handguns in public and also required similar gun prohibitions to have a connection to history.

But just how closely analogous prosecutors must come to a historic law has been a matter of debate. Last year, for instance, the Supreme Court upheld a federal law that bars guns for Americans who are the subject of certain domestic abuse restraining orders, rejecting an argument pressed by gun rights groups that the prohibition violated the Second Amendment.

The conservative 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld that decision, holding in a brief decision that the historical record points only to laws that barred guns for Americans who are actively intoxicated or under the influence of drugs at the time of their arrest. The government, the court ruled, could not target habitual users.

The Trump administration appealed that decision.

J'attends de tout mon coeur, la conccurence et la joie de pouvoir prendre le train sans avoir à stresser car des grèves vont être misent en place! A quant la conccurence qui va vous rentrer dedans et vous mettre au chomage??? avec tout les privileges que vous avez, vous devrier vous faire tout tout petit et vous taire!!
Je ne prends plus le train! Mais ma voiture! Train Trops cher, et pas vraiment super! Donc ciao pour toujours!

ils nous font chier tous les agents de la sncf que je connais sont tous propriétaires et ils partent souvent en vacances ils ont droit à vie au train gratuit j étais soignant à l hôpital nous étions réquisisionnés et si on ne venait pas travailler on était viré

Il n'y a aucun respect des clients /usagers !
Pour tous la vie est difficile et les transports sont coûteux : les congés scolaires sont souvent le moment où les parents fatigués amènent leurs enfants en garde chez les grands parents. Annuler autant de trains à 48h du départ plonge un maximum de familles dans les problèmes et ajoute du stress et des frais supplémentaires.
Je n'ai donc aucun respect pour les grévistes, pour les dirigeants de la SNCF

Je fais régulièrement des aller retour Bourgogne région centre et à plusieurs reprises le train Nevers Tours à été annulé.
Je devrais refaire un aller retour fin avril,début mai et j'hésite à prendre les billets.
La sncf qui se vantede son bilan carbone nous force à prendre notre voiture ce qui me gêne beaucoup.
